Pressing hay at the Alex Wilson farm in Hammond
Pressing hay at the Alex Wilson farm. Standing at the press on the platform is Milo G. King. Standing on ground, left to right, are Alex Wilson (with fork), Lewis King at scales, Gene Catlin, and Earl Wilson. Man on top of the press is unknown. The hay press was owned by Fred Rebscher of Redwood, NY. Lewis King furnished the horses and ran the press. He received 35 cents per ton of hay pressed, other workers earned about 20 cents a ton. Bales weighed about 200 pounds each and they could press 20 bales an hour at best. Bales were prepared in this way for shipment by train to the city market. Photo loaned by Albert L. King. 1903. Hammond, NY.
