Sherwins Mill on Grasse River in Canton
Sherwins Mill: Flour, Seed & Farm Seed. Erected in 1859-60 by Lucius Moody (brother-in-law of Silas Wright), the mill was originally a fine three story brick building, 40’ by 60’ in size, that housed four runs of stones and machinery for grinding out wheat, oats, barley, corn, and buckwheat. Ownership passed from Moody to Hodskin & Sherwin and finally to D.W. Sherwin. Built out into the West Channel of the Grasse River, the mill was vulnerable to the ravages of floods, ice and the logs that would come cascading down the river. By 1898 the mill was closed with machinery still in place. Photo circa 1890s. From Roger Bailey’s 19th Century Canton photo spot in the St. Lawrence Plaindealer. Canton, NY.
